Professor/Chief Scientist and Team Leader

Dr. Amjad Masood Husaini is an Agricultural Scientist who is currently Professor-cum-Chief Scientist in Plant Biotechnology and Incharge, Genome Engineering & Societal Biotechnology Lab at SKUAST-Kashmir, J&K (India). He was a visiting Scientist at the Sustainable Agricultural Systems Lab, United States Department of Agriculture, Beltsville, Maryland (USA) and the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Oxford (UK). He holds a PhD in Biotechnology and PG Diploma in Bioinformatics, besides certificates in diverse research, teaching and management fields like Intellectual Property Rights (ILI, New Delhi), Remote Sensing Applications in Agriculture (IARI-ISRO), Bioinformatics for Protein Biology (EMBL-EBI), Specialized University Course for Oxford Professors (ILI, Oxford), Advanced techno-management (ASCI, Hyderabad), Genome editing (DU & IARI, New Delhi), Climate-smart agriculture, Participatory plant breeding, etc.

My Mission & Vision

My Mission

My mission as an agricultural scientist is to fight malnutrition in women/children and increase farmers’ incomes in the developing world. I focus on rice, strawberry and saffron. Rice, because it is of vital importance in the socio-economic fabric of the farming communities in Asia (India). Strawberry, because the economic return / time/ space/ investment is high. Saffron because it is a GI of Kashmir (my birthplace) and is a high value low volume crop with tremendous export potential. Each of these crops faces a peculiar set of problems and my aim is to contribute significantly in the advancement of our knowledge towards these challenges, and use biotechnological tools for translating that knowledge into mitigating these challenges. I believe that in order to achieve this, it is necessary to follow a multi-disciplinary approach with a multi-pronged strategy, and therefore I warmly welcome collaborations.

My Vision

To create good human resource using RBPT Based Teaching Approach and to establish a state-of-the-art educational institution for weaker and under-privileged classes, so as to bridge the gap between haves and have-nots.

Teaching at undergraduate & postgraduate levels has been an interest always as I feel personal satisfaction in developing scientific temper in the future of our Nation- The Youth. I am also keen to get introduced to new ideas from these creative budding scientists who have a fertile imagination and creative mind.
