Professor/Chief Scientist and Team Leader

Dr. Amjad Masood Husaini is an Agricultural Scientist who is currently Professor-cum-Chief Scientist in Plant Biotechnology and Incharge, Genome Engineering & Societal Biotechnology Lab at SKUAST-Kashmir, J&K (India). He was a visiting Scientist at the Sustainable Agricultural Systems Lab, United States Department of Agriculture, Beltsville, Maryland (USA) and the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Oxford (UK). He holds a PhD in Biotechnology and PG Diploma in Bioinformatics, besides certificates in diverse research, teaching and management fields like Intellectual Property Rights (ILI, New Delhi), Remote Sensing Applications in Agriculture (IARI-ISRO), Bioinformatics for Protein Biology (EMBL-EBI), Specialized University Course for Oxford Professors (ILI, Oxford), Advanced techno-management (ASCI, Hyderabad), Genome editing (DU & IARI, New Delhi), Climate-smart agriculture, Participatory plant breeding, etc.

Dr. Husaini has significantly contributed to Translational Sciences by developing stress tolerant strawberry using transgenic approach. Dr. Amjad M. Husaini is a founder member of Division of Biotechnology at SKUAST Kashmir, and initiated biotechnological research on major field crops like rice and saffron. Earlier Dr. Husaini along with his fellow colleagues at Mountain Research Centre for Field Crops (erstwhile Rice Research & Regional Station), SKUAST of Kashmir worked industriously in research, development and popularization of high yielding rice varieties suitable for Kashmir zone. He is co-breeder of three blast resistant high yielding cold tolerant rice varieties released by SKUAST-K as Shalimar Rice-2, 3, 4 and one aromatic selection Shalimar Sugandh-1. He is co-breeder of two cold tolerant rice CMS lines (SKAU 7A and 11A) and has significantly contributed in genetic purification of a local aromatic rice landrace ‘Mushk budji’ which was released by SKUAST-K for commercialization under Public-Private Partnership mode in 2014, and was a huge success. He has contributed significantly towards Saffron R&D, especially its introduction in newer areas, organic production technologies, Saffronomics, in vitro multiplication and adulteration problems. He has introduced activity-based protein profiling (ABPP) of alpha-glycosidases in plants using alpha-configured cyclophellitol aziridine probes carrying various fluorophores or biotin. He validated novel alpha-glycosidase probes and beta-glucuronidase probes and quantified 67 active glycosidases in saffron crocus stigma, of which 10 are differentially active. His study also uncovered massive changes in hydrolase activities in the corms upon infection with Fusarium oxysporum using multiplex fluorescence labeling in combination with probes for serine hydrolases and cysteine proteases.

He has developed ‘Saffron Rapid Test’ app for checking the authenticity of saffron which is available for free download on google play store Saffron Rapid Test – Apps on Google Play. DOI: 10.13140/RG.2.2.14520.93444. The Saffron Rapid Test app is an AI-based App designed to allow everyone with a smartphone and magnifier to test the authenticity of Saffron instantly and the details of the research can be accessed in our research paper https://doi.org/10.3389/fpls.2022.945291.

My Mission & Vision

My Mission

My mission as an agricultural scientist is to fight malnutrition in women/children and increase farmers’ incomes in the developing world. I focus on rice, strawberry and saffron. Rice, because it is of vital importance in the socio-economic fabric of the farming communities in Asia (India). Strawberry, because the economic return / time/ space/ investment is high. Saffron because it is a GI of Kashmir (my birthplace) and is a high value low volume crop with tremendous export potential. Each of these crops faces a peculiar set of problems and my aim is to contribute significantly in the advancement of our knowledge towards these challenges, and use biotechnological tools for translating that knowledge into mitigating these challenges. I believe that in order to achieve this, it is necessary to follow a multi-disciplinary approach with a multi-pronged strategy, and therefore I warmly welcome collaborations.

My Vision

To create good human resource using RBPT Based Teaching Approach and to establish a state-of-the-art educational institution for weaker and under-privileged classes, so as to bridge the gap between haves and have-nots.

Teaching at undergraduate & postgraduate levels has been an interest always as I feel personal satisfaction in developing scientific temper in the future of our Nation- The Youth. I am also keen to get introduced to new ideas from these creative budding scientists who have a fertile imagination and creative mind.

I welcome open-minded collaboration

I envisage developing collaborations that will facilitate in the easier and smoother transfer of technology/useful products to the targeted stakeholders viz., farmers and industry; and hence shall fulfill the purpose of my life.

My research question

In my opinion science is the way forward to solve the ‘mystery of life’. As sessile organisms, plants require a tremendously flexible metabolism to allow them to adapt to, and withstand changing environmental conditions. My research group is interested in using omics- approaches to identify and functionally characterize this defense network in plants. At the metabolic level, we are interested in developing metabolic flux maps and link them to transcriptomic and proteomic changes that control metabolism during stress. Furthermore, we are interested in using computational methods to explore the relationship between (static) structure and dynamic function in stress proteins.

Applied & translational research approach:

  • Societal Biotechnology and translational research with focus on organic agricultural biotechnology, plant tissue culture and modern molecular biology tools.
  • Using Genome engineering and Plant-microbe Interaction for Organic Agricultural Biotechnology of saffron and rice.
  • Developing crops with climate resilience for livelihood security of farming community.
  • Working towards skill development in youth and women.

Hobbies

Reading  Sufi / Vedantic / Philosophical  books on topics of mysticism and mystery of life; Visiting  institutes of repute and places of special importance; Participating in thought-provoking seminars, symposia and brain storming meetings; Watching television; Playing table tennis.

Formal/ Informal Mentors and Personality Development Books

A mentor is a trusted advisor who provides guidance, support, and advice to a less experienced individual. A book can also act as a mentor because reading books provides us with the opportunity to gain different perspectives and insights. We can draw on the experiences of others to expand our viewpoint. Books can be an excellent resource for guidance and inspiration, and complement personal mentorship. A combination of both—reading widely and engaging with a mentor— provides a holistic approach to personal development.
